What it is (the vendor's words)

Linear's llms.txt: "Linear is a purpose-built tool for planning and building products. Meet the system for modern software development. Streamline issues, projects, and product roadmaps." The legal name is from the Terms of Service (effective 2026-06-09): "the service ... provided by Linear Orbit, Inc." The terms carry an AI Services Addendum under which "fees for AI Services ... may include usage-based billing calculated on consumption metrics (e.g., tokens, API calls, or compute units)".

For agents calling in, the vendor publishes a hosted MCP server: "The Model Context Protocol (MCP) server provides a standardized interface that allows any compatible AI model or agent to access your Linear data in a simple and secure way", with "tools available for finding, creating, and updating objects in Linear like issues, projects, and comments". Streamable HTTP at https://mcp.linear.app/mcp (read-write) and https://mcp.linear.app/mcp/readonly (read tools only); /sse is a deprecated fallback. The page says: "The interactive setup flow uses OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration. You can also authenticate directly with a bearer token or Linear API key", the latter "to interact with the MCP server as an app user, provide read-only access through a restricted API key, or integrate with an existing Linear OAuth application without an extra authentication hop". Enterprise-managed authorization through Okta is documented too. The server's code is not published, so source is null.

Can an agent use it without an account? (measured)

No. On 2026-09-11 at 23:25Z the researcher sent an MCP initialize request to https://mcp.linear.app/mcp with no credentials from a cloud IP: 401, www-authenticate: Bearer realm="OAuth", resource_metadata="https://mcp.linear.app/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/mcp", error="invalid_token", body {"error":"invalid_token","error_description":"Missing or invalid access token"}. A bare GET answers 401 as well. Every documented path (OAuth 2.1, an API key, an OAuth application's token) is a credential of a Linear workspace member or app, so noAccountNeeded is false and auth is oauth, the documented default.

Freemium, from the pricing page read 2026-09-11: Free "$0 Free for everyone" with unlimited members, 2 teams, 250 issues, "Agent platform" and "Linear Agent"; Basic $10 per user per month billed yearly; Business $16 per user per month billed yearly, which adds "Triage Intelligence", "Loops", "Code Intelligence"; Enterprise on custom annual billing. The feature table lists "MCP access" under "AI and agent workflows"; the MCP documentation page puts no plan condition on the server, and the researcher did not establish from the page's text which plans include it. Prices are the vendor's on that date and change without notice to this registry.

None claimed. The nearest is eng.triage-issues, and the vendor's Triage page covers part of it. Triage is "a special inbox for your team" for issues created by integrations or by members outside the team, and its automation section says: "Triage Intelligence allows LLMs to analyze every new issue in triage against your existing issues to suggest properties like assignee and label, and pro-actively surface likely related issues or duplicates based on the analysis of the issue's content against historical behavior in your workspace", and Triage Rules "can update an issue's team, status, assignee, label, project and priority" when conditions are met. Both are "available on our Business and Enterprise plans."

The vendor's words cover labeling, routing and duplicate detection, as suggestions an LLM makes and rules act on; they do not claim reproduction.
