What it is (the vendor's words)

From its llms.txt: "Context7 provides up-to-date, version-specific documentation and code examples for software libraries, delivered straight into the prompts of AI coding agents via a REST API, a hosted MCP server, and the ctx7 CLI. It indexes documentation from GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket repos, websites, llms.txt files, OpenAPI specs, and Confluence spaces, and serves topic-filtered snippets on demand." Libraries are addressed as /{org}/{project}, optionally with a version tag.

Can an agent use it without an account? (measured)

Yes, for reading. On 2026-09-08 the researcher called, with no credentials and the user agent public-agents-ci:

• GET https://context7.com/api/v2/libs/search?query=astro: 200, a ranked list of libraries.
• GET https://context7.com/api/v2/context?libraryId=/withastro/astro&query=content+collections: 200, documentation snippets with their source URLs.
• POST https://mcp.context7.com/mcp with an MCP initialize request: 200, server Context7 version 4.0.5, tools advertised.

The vendor's own surfaces agree, in three places: llms.txt ("Search and docs endpoints work anonymously at low rate limits"), the OpenAPI specification (search and context list an empty security option beside bearerAuth), and /.well-known/integrations.json ("Anonymous access works at low rate limits"). One page disagrees: the API guide opens with "All API requests require authentication using an API key", then says under Rate Limits "Without API key: Low rate limits". The measurement and the majority of the vendor's text say anonymous read access works; the API guide's first sentence is inaccurate as written. The anonymous rate limit is not published as a number; the vendor says 429 with RateLimit-* headers when it is hit.

The OpenAPI document names https://context7.com/api as its server; that base answers 404 to a bare request (HEAD and GET, 2026-09-08), so this entry carries the OpenAPI document as the API surface rather than the base URL.

Writing (adding a library, refreshing, private repositories, team policies) requires a key; keys come from a dashboard account. The vendor's plans page (2026-09-08): Free at $0 with 1,000 included API calls, Pro at $10 per seat per month with 5,000, Enterprise custom.

The MCP server and CLI are published at github.com/upstash/context7 under the MIT licence (repository metadata, 2026-09-08). The hosted index and API are a service; no licence field is set on this entry because the tool an agent calls is the service, not the repository.
